I think what we were saying was that backups of any sort are laughably bad on Android, encryption or not. Which is true, cloud backups on Android are very incomplete, and local backups are even worse off, essentially abandoned in AOSP.
What Google fails to mention in that blog post is that the reason Play Services backups could be encrypted is because they basically back up nothing, and Google expects all of your actual data to be backed up to their non-E2EE services like Google Photos and Google Drive.
While Apple very unfortunately didn’t have E2EE iCloud backups until the beginning of this year, they’ve always had a full local, encrypted backup option since the iPhone was released.
Debatable about the majority, but you’re right, it was only the new generative AI features in the Pixel 8 which were being offloaded to the cloud, so I shouldn’t have grouped all the AI features together. Other features like Now Playing and Live Caption are very cool
